Immigrants Raise Wages Instead of Triggering a Race to the Bottom

Forget the anti-immigrant talking points. New York Times columnist Jean Guerrero explains why immigration can raise wages for U.S. citizens.

One of the major talking points of the anti-immigrant movement is the impact that undocumented workers have on wages for less-educated Americans.

Instead of driving down wages, most studies show that immigration does the opposite. It increases wages for American-born workers, including those without a college education.

Immigration also grows the economy, as Michael Clemens, professor of economics at George Mason University, told Planet Money, absorbing newcomers who start businesses and become consumers.

At the Journal’s Los Angeles event, columnist and author Jean Guerrero held out a vision for even greater wage growth if undocumented workers were legalized instead of driven out of the country - or clapped in brutal detention centers and offshore prisons.

We asked these experts to describe the Trump inroads on issues like immigration and climate. Then we asked for solutions. You may be surprised at the answers.
